60 Aldgate

Aldgate High Street was one of the busy gateways into the medieval City of London and the stretch in front of the Aldgate has been known as Butchers Alley for over 300 years. The demolition of the Haydon Goodsyard Station and the subsequent construction of the Metropolitan Line and Aldgate Station has left behind a large gap in the street frontage. 60 Aldgate, a new office building, will help to close this urban void between the City and Whitechapel. 

The structure of the 60 Aldgate building is designed in response to the constraints imposed by the London Underground below, incorporating a large cantilever. The need for the building to float above the tracks is celebrated through vaulted entrance spaces carved into the volume. The red-coloured timber vaults provide space for the foyer, cafés and the realigned medieval passageway, Harrow Alley.

The Still & Star, a Public House first noted in 1730 as a gin palace and slum pub, will be rebuilt in green pigmented concrete on Aldgate High Street as a gin distillery with botanical herb farm, preserving an imprint of its history.
